2019 Scholarship Awardees

Alejandro Jaime Reyes

Laguna Creek High School, Elk Grove, CA

Soccer

“The feeling of losing, how to take that feeling, use it to strive to improve and work even harder”

Alejandro grew up playing baseball, basketball, and soccer and eventually narrowed his love of sports to focus on soccer for his “pure love of the game.”  Alejandro has played with the FC Elk Grove Competitive Soccer Club and on the men’s varsity high school soccer team since his sophomore year; earning two consecutive All-League Metro awards and Most Valuable Player as a junior.

Alejandro is a scholar athlete with a 3.8 GPA in an International Baccalaureate (IB) Program that provides high school students an opportunity to pursue college-level studies.  Alejandro has received a partial scholarship and will take his soccer skills to play for the Dominican University of California, a NCAA Division II in the Pacific West Conference.  Alejandro receives inspiration from his parents and will be pursuing a degree in Psychology. 

Miranda Isela Perez

West Campus High School, Sacramento, CA

Golf

“I will fight to make our future a brighter and better one for every human after me.”

Miranda was introduced to golf by her father and her brother and she has played varsity golf for four years at West Campus High School.  In 2018, the girls’ golf team placed first in their league and were runner-up in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division IV Girls Section.  Miranda is co-captain of her golf team, plays recreational soccer and serves as an assistant coach for an under 10 youth soccer team.

She has also served as the Founder and President of the school’s Art Club for four years and volunteers as a mentor for a spiritual retreat program for teens. Miranda will take her 4.0 GPA to Cosumnes River College with plans to transfer to Mills College in Oakland, CA.  Miranda is drawn to her love of the arts and will be studying Film/Digital Cinema/Media Studies and Psychology.

Yazmine Cepeda

River City High School, West Sacramento, CA

“I am prepared for the future because I know I can face whatever is thrown my way”

Yazmine began playing softball at 11 years of age and has played for 4 years at River City High School.  Her passion is in the Electrical Engineering field and she is the Science and Engineering Academy Officer for River City High School.  In 2018, she participated in Region 4 Leadership and Skills USA Championships.  Region 4 serves 19 counties and Yazmine placed in the top 10 in the Electronic Technology field. Yazmine is on the Principals Honor Roll and carries a 3.71 GPA.  She has applied to attend Cal Poly Pomona, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, or UCLA and has been accepted to CSUS.

Jacob Edwards

C.K. McClatchy High School, Sacramento, CA

Wrestling / Baseball

“Playing sports in high school has helped me prepare for college because you have to be able to manage your time in school and maintain good grades”

Jacob began playing baseball at a very early age and was introduced to wrestling by his father and began competing in the 8th grade. Jacob played both sports for four years in high school and he is the C.K. McClatchy Lion’s first ever 3-time Metro League Wrestling Champion.  He was also selected as athlete of the week and Most Valuable Player (MVP) for wrestling.  In baseball, Jacob was MVP his freshman and sophomore years on the Junior Varsity team.

Jacob and his friends, and teammates raised over $10,000.00 in seven weeks for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).  “I know that whatever I do in life, it has to do with helping people,” explains why Jacob is interested in pursuing a major in nursing and Kinesiology.  Jacob has a 3.9 GPA and has been accepted to CSUS and UNR for nursing.  He has also applied to SDSU and CSUF.

Yaire Padilla

West Campus High School, Sacramento, CA

Tennis

“The events that once traumatized me as a child, I use now as a motivation to continue doing better and going above and beyond to reach my goals”

Yaire “wanted to be part of something” so she began to play recreational tennis.  She received support from her brother and continued to play for the West Campus High School Girls Tennis Team.  Yaire was the 2018 Greater Sacramento League Tennis Doubles Champion and the Golden Empire League Tennis Singles #2 Champion.

She volunteers at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was part of a group that was successful in gaining parish support for a Spanish speaking mass. Yaire is very involved in the Hispanic community and assists in fundraising for a variety of worthy causes. She has a 3.8 GPA and will be majoring in Architecture.  Yaire developed an interest in Architecture when she and her family traveled to Mexico City.  The unique architecture of Mexico’s beautiful buildings in various cities and towns left a lasting impression and fueled her passion to study Architecture. She has applied to attend California Polytechnic State University.

Vianna Barron

Sheldon High School, Elk Grove, CA

Softball

“I have learned what the words responsibility, punctuality, teamwork, effort, sacrifice, and passion mean”

Vianna grew up playing baseball and competitive softball.  She began her competitive softball career as a 10 year old.  She attended the Premier Girls Fastpitch tournament and placed 2nd out of 80 teams.  Vianna is the captain of the Sheldon High School Girls softball team and has won 2 Division Championships, 1 San Joaquin Section Championship, and 3-time consecutive year Delta League Champion.

Vianna is an award merit recipient of the Math/Engineering/Science Academy in the Sacramento School District, Academic Achievement Award, and Multiple Honorable mentions in various art media work.  She submitted an Advanced Placement Art portfolio receiving the highest score possible and earned college credits.  She participates in various worthy causes and helps children with disabilities. Vianna maintains a 3.5 GPA and will major in Criminal Justice will attend Eastern Kentucky University on a softball scholarship.

Benjamin Juarez

Oakridge High School, El Dorado Hills, CA

Basketball / Lacrosee / Soccer

“My family experiences shaped me into the person I am today, and the person I am going to be”

Benjamin is a National Hispanic Scholar and plays basketball, lacrosse, and soccer while maintaining a 4.3 GPA.  Benjamin is the captain of his high school varsity basketball team and was an All-Tourney Selection for Junior Varsity basketball. His lacrosse skills earned him a US Lacrosse All-American Nomination.  He is an AP Scholar with Distinction – an award to students who average a minimum of 3.5 on all AP exams and score 3 or more on at least five of those exams.

Benjamin volunteers as a boys’ team member, a special needs buddy and a group leader.  He is a member of the Computer Science Club, and is a tutor for Computer Science and Math.  Benjamin became interested in medicine when a family member was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, hospitalization of his grandfather (Vincent Juarez 2007 MAHFSA Soccer Inductee), and his participation in the Student Shadow Program at Sutter Health Trauma Center.  These experiences have fueled his passion for medicine and technology.  He wants to use computer science in the medical field.  Benjamin will pursue a degree in computer science and is accepted to Caltech to play basketball.

Mateo Luna Broomstead

Bradshaw Christian High School

Football

Mateo began playing competitive basketball and football at age nine. He continued playing through high school and as a freshman he made the varsity basketball team. In football he earned Bradshaw’s J. V. Most Valuable Player award as a running back and outside linebacker. Mateo Played both offense and defense on his varsity football team averaging 1,600 all-purpose yards scoring 64 touchdowns during his three varsity years. He was selected Sierra Delta League’s Offensive Player of the Year, Sacramento Bee All Metro Honorable Mention, and All State Football Nominee at running back. Mateo will attend Boise State University to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and his long term goal is to go to law school.

Marissa Garcia

Women’s Basketball

Marissa’s love of basketball allowed her to make her high school’s women’s varsity basketball team as a freshman where she played all four years. Her basketball team won first place all four years. As a senior this year she was named team captain with a 4.3 GPA. Marissa is passionate about education and English is her favorite subject. Her academic interests are to attend Sierra College, major in Communications with extensive coursework in English and Writing. One of Marissa’s goals is to teach abroad in a foreign country.

Shea Moreno

Women’s Softball

Shea grew up playing baseball and competitive softball. At a very young age she aspired to play collegiate and professional softball. Shea maintains a 4.0 Grade Point Average while playing competitive softball and was selected for Sacramento’s All-Metro League, All City and All State Softball Teams. In the fall 2018 Shea will attend UCLA on a softball scholarship and aspires to coach and become a sports broadcaster

Alyssa Perez

Women’s Soccer / Golf

Alyssa began playing soccer at age 8 in Tahoe Park and moved up to play for the FC Elk Grove, then to Natomas United competitive soccer leagues. During this time she also played on the Sutter Junior High School’s City-League Championship Teams. Her grandfather Gilbert Luna, M.A. Hall of Fame Board Trustee, taught her the love of golf and she participated in the Latino Junior Golf Association winning Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals. Alyssa participates in McClathcy’s rigorous Humanities and International Studies Program (HISP) and maintains a 4.5 GPA by taking Honor and AP classes. Her goal is to attend a University of California campus in the fall 2018.

Men’s Soccer

Roberto Carlos began playing competitive soccer at seven years of age. He developed a life-long passion for the sport and he is one of Sacramento’s most talented soccer stars. He is a four year starter on his varsity high school soccer teams earning All-League, Freshman-of-the-Year, All Conference and has participated in three High School Soccer Section League Championships. Roberto Carlos plans to continue to play soccer in college, earning a Business degree with emphasis in real estate.

Jessica has played softball all of her life and during the school year she plays softball in the fall for a competitive club team and for her high school during the spring. Jessica is proud to be a Christian Brothers Falcon where she maintains a 3.67 GPA. Jessica has applied to numerous nursing programs and is currently waiting for her acceptance letter
